Of the archeological excavations to date of the early classical period of Antiquity, the sites of Gradiste-Zivojno, Gradiste-Beranci, Elenik-Mojno deserve special attention.
The Macedonian-Hellenistic period is especially confirmed in Heraclea by the investigation of the necropolis, that is, the fortification at the top of the hill, which still has not been fully explored. Actually through the antique site of Heraclea, the development of an antique town can be followed, from IV c B.C till the VI c. AD and the medieval necropolis from X-XI c. AD. The classical Roman period is represented by the locality of Heraclea Lyncestis. The period of Late Antiquity is represented by the localities: Kale near the village of Dolenci, Suvodol near the location Slanec with Early-Christianity basilica, Suvi Livadi near Dolenci with the Early-Christianity basilica, the location called Turi Grav near the village of Suvodol, the settlement of Sadevi near the village Velusina, Maver, near the village Paralovo necropolis and others.
All of the investigated and known archaeological sites from Bitola and its vicinity are registered in the index of the Archaeological Map of the Republic of Macedonia.
Parallel to the investigations of this department, scientific research and conservation of the materials and its recording has been performed.
No less intensity has been devoted to activities concerning the presentation of the archaeological wealth of this region by organizing many exhibitions, lectures and panel discussions by the expert team of the department.
This department possesses an impressive fund of more than 12 000 registered items and other collected materials, with more than 170 registered and recorded sites in the region of the Municipality of Bitola
